Good brand of diet tonic? (taste, grape, brands, mixed drinks)

I had a vodka tonic using a generic diet tonic and it was....not very good. It was kind of yuck actually.

Is this the case with all diet tonics or do some of the brands actually taste good.

Lastly, is there a trick to making these diet mixed drinks taste more like the real thing?

I'm not a tonic drinker, but I find Canada Dry diet Ginger Ale to be quite good.

Generic sodas almost never are palatable to me.

The only problem I have had with generic brands, they seem to be flat or go flat quicker than the better brands. I think Seghrams (spelling) makes a tonic, but I don't know about diet tonic.

I picked up some diet Canada Dry tonic a few days ago. I haven't had a chance to try it, yet. Maybe I'll pick up some diet Seagrams, too, and do a taste test.

The generic stuff that I used last time did seem kind of flat.

There are a few (very, very few) "old school" tonic waters (very little sweetner) out there - purely an aside, but when did TW become "sweet"? It used to be a "tonic", or bitter flavored. Ah well.
Oh, a buddy of mine makes his own - quite good, too!

I wish you could get diet tonic at bars and restaurants. Vodka tonic is my go to drink, but there's too much sugar in tonic, so I've had to switch to diet 7Up or Sprite or Sierra Mist. Not quite the same...

Agreed 100%. Syrup & Vodka just doesn't cut it.

If you can find Vintage tonic, the diet is pretty good. They also make a Lime flavored diet tonic and Grapefruit!!

I like to add a good squeeze of fresh lime...it helps overcome the cheap soda taste!

I like Seagrams, Canada Dry and Schweppes equally but use store brand a good bit. (Haven't had much alcohol while I've been getting some pain issues under control). Publix isn't too bad for those who have them.

Alexei is right -- the lime helps a lot.
