I think you can legally make moonshine for fuel these days. Not sure if you need a permit or not. Everclear-I have heard- tastes a lot like moonshine. Good, well made, aged moonshine-I have heard- goes down smooth, but will knock you on your a**. 100 proof and you have no hangover. Unaged moonshine- I have heard -tastes like you have filled a glass half full of water then topped it off with rubbing alcohol. Don't try this, I'm just using it as an example. Again, I say do not try it.

I agree with the posters who point out the dangers of getting it from an unknown source- I have heard of some dangerious stuff out there. Just amazing what you can hear, ain't it?

( regarding taste).......depends upon who makes it.

I have tasted some that went down really smooth with a good " kick" to it.

I have tasted some that was worse than diesel fuel.

Both claimed they were experts and theirs was the best.

You can order your own still from Col. Wilson in AR.

The perfect Christmas gift: your own copper moonshine still « Tennessee Guy

My great-great-uncle Dyke used to have a still in a small house on the hill near my grandparents house in WV.

Main reason its illegal as others mentioned, is for tax purposes. I think you can make 'personal quantities' that can't be sold. Also if its not distilled properly some impurities can make you quite ill.

That's where I learned to slide beer down the side of the glass to avoid making foam! My parents were so proud ...

You can do this with cheap vodka, too. Yum!

There is an exception for certasin quantities of beer and wine but no amount of distilled spirits.

Apologize for not reading this whole thread, but here is how to make white lightning:

One yeast cake
one pound white sugar
on gallon of water

shake well

use fermentation trap (stopper in jug, little hose from stopper into jar of water) when it stops bubbling its done.

distill (boil over heat, clean hose through water to cool and drips out the other end)

I made alcohol that was high enough proof to light right up at room temperature with only a match next to it (probably around 120-140 proof), but it tasted terrible. Probably the plastic hose.

Wink Its Legal in TN as of July 2, 2010

TN finally passed a law that allows you to make and sell moonshine in your store as long as you get the license. The only brewery I know of now is Ole Smokey Distillery in Gatlinburg, TN.
