Back in the party hearty days of the 70s and 80s, we served Taittinger's champagne for guests. Frankly, we bought it to "put on the dog" because I was a beer person and wife didn't usually drink at all. But we came to really like it, better than Dom or any other mid-price champagne (never tried the real pricey stuff). Anyway, what's your opinion of Taittinger vis-a-vis Dom et al. in that price range?

Vintage-quality Taittinger (with a year bottled on label) is on par with Dom Perignon in my opinion, though of course Dom Perignon has that more special stigma attached for some reason. If you want as good a quality as either at a much more reasonable price check out Veuve Clicquot Brut or Roederer Estate Brut (which makes the granddaddy of them all, Cristal) at around $50-$55, or even Moet & Chandon Imperial Brut which is often less than $40.
