Guys and gals, do you have any suggestions. Something to have on hand for making sauces, stews, general cooking and the occasional drink with dinner. I am thinking $5 or less a bottle. The wine we keep right now is Beringer Bold& Balanced Cabernet Sauvignon its $3.99 a bottle and its from Argentina. I must say its really good, and quite palatable for the price.

The Beringer you mentioned is a good one at that price, Also try the Rex Goliath 47 Pound Rooster Cab or the merlot. Jacob Creek Cab-Shiraz blend for a heartier taste,

Aldi, Intermingle. Cupcake winery, red velvet or just the merlot is good too.

In these parts, Cupcake is about $8-10 - above the OP's price point. I'd also think the red velvet is on the sweet side for cooking purposes.

Actually in my parts Giant rooster (the Goliath you mentioned in your post) wine also sells for the bolded but Cupcake winery wines here sell for about $6. I like the slight sweetness personally especially in beef/tomato dishes as the spices/flavors tend to me all sharp/acidic and the wine mellows it all out. (worsheshire, garlic, acid in tomatoes etc)

To each to their own.

Many states do not carry wine in the aldi's stores.

Just experiment with wines you like to drink. If you like them to drink, they will be fine for cooking too.

I am not a lover of any wines that are even moderately sweet. I have 2 favorites that are in the $5 price range in our region; 1-Linderman has one that ranges from about $4.50 to $5.50 depending on whether on sale or not and Cul de Sac is another. I also picked up a Malbec yesterday for about $5 but I don't remember what brand and haven't had it yet. Malbec is our favorite, followed by a Pinot.
