My DH and I met two other couples for drinks tonight. I was urged to try the Gin cucumber and tonic cocktail. I have shied away from gin, preferring vodka, for the past 25 years. My parents always had gin in the house as a staple liquor. However, when I came of age, it seemed that vodka had replaced gin as the "poplar clear liquor".

Last summer, I visited family in Morth Carolina and I was urged by my stepmom to try a gin cocktail with mulled herbs. It was delicious! I thought that perhaps it was an NC thing.

Now, I am hearing more about gin from others.

Questions - do you think gin is making a comeback - or has it never gone out of style? What are some of your favorite drinks made with gin?

And, why do you think that gin fell out of fashion?

I don't think it's ever been out of fashion (certainly not to me!), but it's definitely used in a myriad of classic, prohibition-era cocktails, which have obviously trended in recent years. We've also seen an influx of small distillery-made gins with the growth of small distilleries (making whiskey, vodka, and gin) in the U.S. So, yes, there probably has been some growth in gin's popularity for those reasons.

Favorite gin cocktails:
- Aviation (for me, this is the perfect blend of tart citrus, herbaceous gin, and a touch of floral and fruit. Easily one of my favorites.)
- Martini (of course), just slightly dirty.
- Salty Dog (i like mine garnished with rosemary)
- French 75
- Corpse Reviver #2
- Gin + Tonic
- Gin Fizz

Of course there are plenty more, but those are some of my faves.

Thanks and rep to all who posted!

I think that when I came of age, vodka was more popular. Another beverage that I remember from my parent's bar was rye. I don't think I've ever had it. But that's for another thread.

I've never tried gin myself but vodka

I know the gin and tonic was all the rage as late back in the 80s but I'm 30 and can't think on anyone I know has ordered it.

Back in the 80s? Not in the US! Gin was very popular here in the 30s - 60s.

The UK has a rather long and intimate relationship with gin - World Gin Day: Very British Gin Cocktails | Anglophenia | BBC America

Subscribed to this thread. I somehow have a TON of gin and no idea how to use it. Gin and Tonic is my go-to cocktail, but I almost never drink cocktails at home.

Definitely gonna try a GinGin Mule when I get a chance, but it doesn't seem like an "every-weekend" type of cocktail.
