There are a lot of variables with wine. Generally the more you drink and learn about it your palate changes and you can really start to see the differences in quality and taste. The cost of wine varies due to how the vineyard is farmed, how the grapes are processed, how it is aged and the quantity that is produced. Once you get into the luxury end of it you will find that the grapes are grown in specific wine growing regions, and how those grapes are farmed. How many times are the vineyard workers touching those grapes, (pruning, soil management, etc...)
How the wine is aged is also a huge cost factor. Are they in oak barrels, or are oak chips being added to stainless steel tanks? The former is much more expensive and to the trained palate preferred.
Then you have case production, distribution, reputation.
Lots of people are willing to spend $50 and up on a bottle of wine, but not the majority for obvious reasons. Most people will be satisfied spending $10 - $15 a bottle. And of course more will spend less. The number one wine sold today is Franzia boxed wine.
