So last night I sat down at Starbucks and ordered a small blonde roast, within about 5 minutes my hands and feet started itching so I went home. Within 10 minutes my entire body was red, itching, ears hurt and heart racing. It didn't go away for about 20 min.

Now I've never had an allergy before...ever and I am 41. I've had this coffee before and I drink coffee daily. Questions:

  • Could this possibly be a one time reaction to mold in the coffee?
  • Could I have developed an allergy to caffeine? Or a certain type of caffeine?
  • The other thing is dander in the air was extremely high yesterday in Denver. Could that have done it?
  • Has anyone ever experienced this before?
Thanks CD-MD!

You can develop allergies after repeated exposure to something you've never been allergic to before. I have developed a sunscreen allergy and many products I used to use now give me a very swollen, itchy face and trouble breathing.

This happened to me with hazelnuts after I had been eating them my whole life. It also happened at Starbucks once. A barista put it in my drink, but he had no idea.

Food allergic reactions usually don't go away on their own within 20 minutes.

Are you on any medication? Here's a webpage that lists coffee drug interactions.

You can develop an allergy "out of the blue" to something you've eaten your whole life, as others have written. It seems to be unlikely to be a food allergy if it went away that quickly unless you took Benadryl or a steroid.

My did hand me a Benadryl when I walked in.. I guess it worked. I am not on any medication.

I really hope I am not allergic to Coffee or caffeine because that is going to suck.

Weird!!!
I started drinking Starbucks blonde roast at home.
it has been a week now....My face feels like I rubbed a jalepeno on it!!,
it was really burning on Monday! now it's thursdayand the itchy burning has tapered off.
I have had 2 cups of this every morning.
this is really odd that you posted this.
I'm going to open up a different coffee in the a.m.
And see what happens.

If you ever have a severe reaction, it won't suck because you'll be too afraid to go near what caused it. I'm allergic to wasabi. The first time I had a reaction, it took over a month to get rid of the itchy rash. I was in the ER four times and IV steroids. Benadryl around the clock each day, steroid pills too, and three other medications. It was hell. I didn't know wasabi caused it and I avoided everything I hate for lunch that day---tuna, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, strawberries, etc. It wasn't until a few years later I learned my allergy was wasabi in the tuna salad when I had an allergic reaction to wasabi in a different food.

I'm hesitant to eat out at restaurants now. It's hard to know when wasabi is used as a seasoning. It doesn't help if I ask if wasabi is in food at restaurants because sometimes they don't know. For example, wasabi can be in mustard but the cooks and chefs don't know that. It doesn't suck because I'd rather not have another allergic reaction that lasts for weeks. And I don't want a more severe reaction that causes me to suddenly not be able to breath. The more you expose yourself to an allergen, the greater the risk of that happening someday.

That's exactly what it felt like a jalepeno (in my case a ghost pepper) being rubbed all over. Take some Benadryl.

I am going to tell Starbucks.
