Our 14 year old daughter has had lifelong allergies and is severely allergic to milk. About a year and a half ago she had a severe reaction after a relative making her food made a mistake. In the hospital, she was really loopy. At the time I attributed it to the IV of Pepcid they gave her. She had never acted that way during an allergic reaction, but she had never had Pepcid either.

This past weekend though she started complaining after eating food at a restaurant. She didn't really have any outwardly obvious signs of an allergic reaction, so I was unsure what to do. She took some generic benadryl as a precaution. About 45 minutes later though she was freaking out a bit and acting strangely. She said she didn't feel right, so I gave her a shot. She didn't seem to improve though mentally. She was acting really loopy and kept telling us she was "failing." Her behavior was so strange we called an ambulance. She seemed to be fine though by the time we got to the hospital. She told me she thought that was because the shot "worked." We are confused though now. I don't know if she was acting strangely because of the Benadryl. She has taken Benadryl dozens of times in her life and has never acted like that, though she did take a bit of higher dose on these two occasions. I am thinking it is possible this is a new weird reaction to an allergen. She doesn't know she was acting strangely.

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced odd behavior in these scenarios. I am unsure if we over-reacted when we called the ambulance this time, but we went for the safe rather than sorry approach. We can't afford to be doing this too much in the future though since hospitals and ambulances are so expensive! I would rather like to know what is causing this behavior. If it is a new allergic reaction symptom, then I'll have a better idea what I am dealing with in the future. If it is the medicine, then we may go for a low dose next time. It is really confusing though.

Emotional and behavioural effects of food allergies/intolerances

Two of my kids have behavioral reactions to red food dye. Its' not really noticeable now that they are teens, but as little kids, if they ingested food high in red dye, within 20 minutes they were wild. It would last about 30 minutes and then stop. It was very hard to get these normally pleasant kids to listen during that time. Most doctors I've mentioned this to have just shrugged and agreed there is some evidence that this can happen but they've never had me pursue it. So yes, I think it is possible that your daughter could have an emotional/behavioral reaction to a food that she is reactive to or a new one that hasn't been identified yet.
