I feel a little foolish about posting this but am posting anyway in case it might prove helpful.

For the last several years I've had terrible itching on my back, eruptions on the skin above my left elbow, and burning on my skin when I shower. I thought all this was secondary to chemotherapy I took but while that might be a factor, I think the cause is allergy to sodium laurel sulfate (SLS) which was found in my shampoo, bar soap, dishwashing soap and clothes soap.

I knew that I was allergic to sulfa drugs; over 20 years ago I was given sulfa drugs for a UTI, and broke out in bright red spots all over my body. So recently I by accident ran into some data about SLS--and wondered if this was causing the problems. So, I replaced all these items with products that don't have the SLS (my shampoo had four forms of sulfate chemicals!), re-washed all my bed linen, clothes and towels--and the itching and irritation is going away--and immediately went away in the shower.

Also changed my toothpaste and mouthwash to products without artificial sweeteners but with Xylitol, which is apparently lethal to dogs (we don't have any dogs), but has positive affects on human dentition.

I should have known sooner!!

That's great you were able to make changes. I'm sure your list will help another sufferer.

I'm allergic to sulfa drugs, too, but have never had a problem with sodium laurel sulfate. I know all too well that head-to-toe rash of which you speak.

We should all be making changes, my shampoo, has no SLS , parabens , phthalates or formadehyde, nothing we use should have these toxins in them.. even baby toiletries have them, WHY. when I can now find quite a few makes that dont have them and work well without.. I use Avalon shampoos now.

Wonder if in fact the allergy to sulfa drugs is related to problems with SLS? I don't have any training in chemistry or medicine and am really only guessing.
