Here are the links to 2 government published studies on the herb Elderberry and its efficacy against a group of viruses. Elderberry was proven to be effective against the 10 strains of viruses tested. The viruses tested were not Black Nile, but were potent viruses which cause significant illness.
Beyond these two studies, I personally know people taking Elderberry capsules themselves to combat West Nile Virus, in case they get a mosquito bite from an infected mosquito. I wanted placebo controlled proof though, so I dug up these studies (again, they are on other viruses, but they showed Elderberry effective against the viruses tested).
Elderberry has historically been used for hundreds of years in many countries for similar purposes.

Because Texas has such a high rate of West Nile in the news, people there might wish to know about these government run studies on a simple herb commonly available, to make their own choices as adults.

I stated exactly what you just did: the viruses chosen for those studies were 10 strains of virus, the studies did not opt to test another virus called West Nile virus - however, the viruses tested in the studies were viruses.
Now if a group would please pay for a study on the actual West Nile virus, for those people who won't even try herbs like Elderberry without that specific proof. Until someone pays for such a specific study, adults should be permitted to see any related studies, such as those I posted, and make their own decisions. Pharm companies should not rule the airwaves, and since unpatentable plants like Elderberry can't make big bucks for any company, unpatentable plants like this don't get advertisement space on TV. That's a shame, because Elderberry is used safely all over the world, and apparently in many cases, does the job against certain viruses.
It can't hurt, but I think like antibiotics (different ones for different bacterias), it may not treat everything.
