A sub-optimal cholesterol profile doesn't "cause" heart disease. That's why lowering levels through medication or supplementation doesn't really do much good in the long run. It is one of the many factors that predict it. It just happens to be one of the biggest predictor.
He does bring up a good point about what is the increase in risk when compared to the actual risk. Of course, being disingenuous about relative risks is the same thing the meat and dairy industries have been doing with their studies on cholesterol and saturated fat not being bad.
