“The diuretic and mild laxative effects of caffeine in coffee result in the loss of minerals, including magnesium, via the urine and feces. Additionally, the acid present in coffee wears away at the villi of the small intestine, reducing its ability to absorb nutrients, which is why most heavy coffee drinkers have mineral deficiencies, according to Paul Pitchford.”

It's more than just being a diuretic.

Recently I learned of magnesium and how vital it is to our whole body system, I take it through my skin in a magnesium bath soak for 20 plus minutes at least several times a week. I do notice the difference -- I have had heart palpitations and a lot of weakness. One day a couple weeks ago after I took magnesium bath half an hour later I had no more heart palpitations and felt better overall- not half as weak or tired

A few years ago I developed a terrible irregular heartbeat. I started supplementing heavily with magnesium and it finally resolved. It took almost two years to do so, however. I did read that if one is terribly deficient, it can take a very long time to tank up your stores of this mineral. It is important to supplement enough of it, because it can be poorly absorbed and some of us need and use more than others.

I have two friends who are both into alternative medicines but were NOT up on their magnesium and both ended up with afib and one more than the other constant heart palpitations. Magnesium is so important for the heart and much more. I've been taking it a lot of years.

I can't get down in the tub as I would never get out...things have changed in my body.

My friends, my friends...coffee is actually fairly rich/a good source of magnesium. Sure, coffee is a drink and drinks will cause urination and yes, when you urinate, excess quantities of minerals such as magnesium are negligably lost. However, again, coffee is fairly rich in magnesium.

See the chart/data posted here:

Magnesium is a powerfully important mineral; however, I would urge no one to give up their coffee due to magnesium loss.

It's true so much info and it's good to read the original link too on coffee and magnesium. I drink only 1 cup daily and take over 1000mg mag daily spread thru the day. I know after my cup of morning coffee arthritic pain is reduced.
