Impressions on Dominican Republic AND its cities..

I briefly went to Santo Domingo, and I liked it!

Curious if others have been to other cities...Santiago, Puerto Plata, etc. and their impressions.

I also went to Boca Chica...(I think thats the name, the beach town just outside of Santo Domingo)...beautiful beaches...but mostly I went out of convenience...I heard that the northern beaches are just better - but not sure how or why exactly.

I loved the plaza in Santo Domingo...not sure the name of it, but a nice pedestrian area that stretches a ways...

Your impressions, experiences, etc. in the DR..and what do you think of the cities/towns, etc. that you went to? How would you describe them, etc.?

I have been curious about that city. People seem to like it more than Santo Domingo, although apparently Santiago doesn't get tourists at all. I heard its a place that IF someone ends up going there for some reason, they generally like it, but few do.

Sound about right?

Went to Puerto Plata for a city tour while on vacation. Lots of decay, lots of poverty. Tourists get pestered all the time, and it's annoying.
Lots of cool stuff too mind you, but if I go again i'm staying in the all-inclusive and getting loaded.

I felt that way in Boca Chica.

The only way to not be pestered, was to buy a drink at one of the beach places. The employees shoo away everyone else, to keep your business.

If you try to walk around however, you'll get pestered constantly.

On the other hand, when I walked all over Santo Domingo, I didn't have people pester me much at all. Well, two did, one prostitute, and one ex-criminal from the US who was sent back to his home country of the DR.

In short, maybe it's just certain tourists areas of DR, that tourists get pestered more (somewhat common in many tourists areas, actually).
