No doubt that Rio is a very beautiful city. But sometimes I think people should expand their horizons about Brazil. There are many European citizens living in cities in the Northeast of Brazil, and enjoying the life. Here in Fortaleza, for example, there are hundreds and hundreds of Italians, many of them retirees. Some Dutch have arrived in the last years too. The Northeast also has caipirinhas, samba and fun.
I've heard the Northeast (Recife, Natal, Salvador) has a crime problem. On the other hand, I would be very open to visiting Curitiba.
I would love to live in Brazil for a couple of years. Specifically Rio or Florianopolis. Sao Paulo looks like it could be interesting, but I am not a big fan of the NYC lifestyle so I am not sure if I would like Sao Paulo either (too many people, expensive, too much traffic, too dirty, etc. ).
For me Brazil combines many aspects that I love. Diversity, beaches, big cities, beautiful landscapes and that Latin flair. I don't know what it is but being Puerto Rican I always felt that Brazil was very similar in regards to culture to Puerto Rico. That zest of laid back lifestyle, enjoying life, beach culture, diversity and a very deep Latin flair.

I can ASSURE you, without any shadow of doubt, that there is ZERO difference, IN PRACTICAL TERMS, between the "crime problem" in the big cities of the Northeast and the the big cities of the Southeast and South, like Porto Alegre, Curitiba or Belo Horizonte.
You will NOT fell any safer in Porto Alegre, Curitiba or Belo Horizonte than you would in Recife or Salvador.
I say that without ANY doubt, because I KNOW all those cities.
That can vary a lot from City to City; Maceio and Salvador do have real safety issues, on the other side Fortaleza and Aracaju for example are much better off security-wise. Vitoria in the Southeast for example has loads of troubles. Meanwhile Rio which has probably the worst reputation by far isn't as nearly as bad as it once was and frankly it's completely fine for the most part currently.

In REAL LIFE, in EVERYDAY LIFE, there is no difference between Salvador, Porto Alegre or Curitiba.
The crime issue is the same in the three cities, for the average citizen.
