Why is everyone saying Colombia do you want to kill him. Mr 12. Go to Peru it's just as safe as the USA. Colombia is very unsafe More unsafe then South Africa.

Actually not true at all. Colombia has gotten progressively safer in the past 5 years. Yes there are dangerous parts in the big cities of Medillin, Bogota, Cali, Cartegena, and Barranquilla but if you use some common sense, don't flash a lot of cash and jewerly and have some street sense you should be fine. Just like there are parts of Los Angeles, New Orleans, Dallas, New York, Philly or Baltimore I wouldn't go to if I didn' have intimate local knowledge the same mindset applies in Colombia.
Counter that with South Africa where there are actually signs warning people not to stop at certain intersections of Johannesburg at night because the risk of car jacking so high.
Between the three choices I would choose Argentina. But I agree with those that promote Peru. They speak a standard spanish without any obvious accent like the Spanish or Argentines. Look into Arequipa...beatifull city with great year round weather.

Colombia is NOTHING like parts of LA, NO, NY, Dallas, Philly, Baltimore, etc... I was tackled and rolled by 5 teens in Cali walking down the main street sidewalk in mid-daylight. Worse, I had a gun pulled to the temple of my head in Bogota while I was in a taxi at a stop sign. I wasn't flashing anything to draw attention. Sure Jozi is dangerous but, I also want to testify that I never had that done to me in Hillburgh, Johannesburg wheather I stopped at lights at night or not while driving alone. Just keep moving and noone bothers you.
As far as learning Spanish goes, go to southern Spain and get a GF. That's my advice.
Montevideo, Uruguay or Cordoba, Argentina. If I were in high school and know what I know now I would have gone to Cordoba, studied Spanish for a year, and then gone to university there. Would have saved a ton of $$ on college tuition and had the extra bonus of really becoming fluent in Spanish while living in a city with great nightlife. Plus you can always teach English there to earn extra money instead of the crappy jobs I took in college.

In Cartagena and Bogota there are so many police around that it is unlikely that anyone is going to try to rob or kidnap you. Also I say this as someone who has actually been inside the country.
I'm a high school student thinking about taking a year off before college to become completely fluent in spanish. I have taken 5 years of spanish classes at school. I would like to stay somewhere where I can be immersed in the language, be able to see the beauty of the country, live fairly cheaply, and feel safe. I'm currently looking into Spain, Costa Rica and Argentina. Any suggestions?

Go to Cordoba, Argentina.The girls are super hot, hell even the guys are good looking if that is your thing. You can get out of town and go hike in the mountains easily. Decent sized city but small enough you will get to know people. You won´t regret it. I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil which is considered an exciting city and I would easily trade for Cordoba if I could make a living there.
