I prefer the Dominican Republic - although I might be the only one who does.

Why the DR?

Because, it's much more affordable than most other islands, appears to have lesser crime, and the people are real nice.

Most of the other Carribbean islands, it seems that I hear of them being jaded and crime sometimes seems way too high. Either that or I hear of locals being resentful of Americans/Europeans who may flaunt money around, even if they aren't trying to do so.

When I visited the DR, it just seemed like since their country is quite a bit bigger population-wise than most other islands, they tend not to focus/think so much about the tourists and how tourists might appear better off, etc. So, they just seem more welcoming, and more into their own thing.

Just my impression anyways.

Than again, 'West Indies'...I'm not sure the exact definition of that within the Carribbean. So maybe you're referring more to all of the tiny little islands jutting away from most of the larger countries of the Carribbean.

I believe in development terms Barbados is the most advanced of the island nations there. The Bahamas is about the same in development. Both look to have higher crime rates than the US though, but not as bad as Jamaica or Trinidad.

Some of the territories might be safer, but I don't know how to check crime rate by territory
