The U.S has New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, etc while Brazil has Sao Paulo, Rio De Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Curitiba, Salvador, Manaus, etc.

The U.S.
But only if you use examples like New Orleans, San Francisco, Seattle, etc. rather than examples like Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, etc.
It's almost a crime to use all these colorful interesting Brazilian cities with character, and list them up with some of America's most bland and suburban like sprawl fests like Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, etc.
New York is more interesting than Sao Paulo though, but Rio de Jainero beats L.A. in my book. The other 3 brazilian cities are much more interesting than the u.s. ones listed. Still I'll choose the U.S. as there is so much more to it than what's not listed here.
U.S. While I think Brazilian cities are better than places like Houston, Phoenix, Dallas, San Antonio, etc. The U.S.'s most popular cities are more interesting than Brazil's, and I think it has to do with them being so unique. I am talking about places like NYC, Miami, Chicago, Las Vegas, New Orleans, SF, D.C., etc.
However, there is nothing comparable IMO to Rio de Janiero. It's on my list of places to see before I die.

So the only city in Brazil that interests you is Rio ? So every other city in Brazil is like blah to you ?
What I noticed about Brazilian metropolitan areas is that many of their suburbs are even more ghetto and dangerous than than their city core. For example many of Sao Paulo's suburbs like Guarulhos and Diadema for example, have an even higher per capita murder rate than the actual city of Sao Paulo itself.
The US, for quality of living, safeness, and things to do.
However, Brazil's cities have a lot of cultural blending and are probably more interesting on a cultural level, especially Bahia, which is a center of African culture in South America.
Why is it that everyone needs to compare the U.S. with everything else? What's better the U.S. or my tires? The U.S. or your mama....etc!
