Not true. Many cruise ships now avoid Jamaica due to the levels of violence and crime and have instead opted for Central American ports as an alternative.
The two times I vacationed in Jamaica were both subject to crime and other unpleasant events.
When on a Caribbean cruise; if one of the ports is Ocho Rios or other Jamaican destination, we don't even get off the boat for that one.
You need only have a machete stuck in your face and told to hand over your wallet in broad daylight in down town Ocho Rios once to put that one behind you forever. While staying at a hotel in Runway Bay we were told point blank to not leave the hotel compound unless by arranged tour bus or taxi as the political unrest in the area was threatening.
Being approached by a young male while walking with my wife in Ocho Rios and asked if we would like a three way with his 13 year old sister did not endear the place to us either.
They can keep it. I can find all the filth and squalor I want a lot closer to home thanks.
A return to colonialism, well, I look at it this way. Was it really that great under colonialism? I ask this because my own research leads me to believe that colonialism is basically one nation ruling over another nation and there are alot of inequalities that come from that.
it'd be a revert back to colonialism. yes there would be some benefits like free visa travel within the EU but what would that really take the debt burden from the IMF off of Jamaica? Hyperinflation is ridiculous on the island. IMO being a commonwealth nation is already a sign of de facto neo colonialism. I don't know how the island was under colonialism, but when I see pictures of my family living in Kingston in the 40's/50's they lived in dire poverty (although they always tell me life wasn't as hard then as it is there now). You walk the same streets in that part of Kingston and the poverty is still there. Even without the British there's still heavy racial/class segregation on the island.
Jamaica will still be in the state it's in whether or not there is colonialism. The people in power are corrupt which makes the country the way it is. Yes, there are corrupt people in power in every country, but for some reason Jamaican politicians seems to be the worst. I don't know what will make Jamaica better. Maybe the people who leave and go to foreign countries to make a better life for themselves can come and give back to the country they came from. Most of the time people leave and don't look back or just try to get their families out. There needs to be some kind of grassroots movement there.

Sounds similar to the dynamic that works in many of the USA's inner city areas. The persons who get enough resources to leave and make a better life for themselves rarely come back. At the least a grassroots movement is needed. Corruption has existed in Jamaican since day one. Its roots are very deep in colonialism, and yet, it hasn't been shaken off. The question is not "can we be independent", it is more, "how to shake off the mindset that came because of colonialism". It is a matter of "this was done to the nation a long time ago, and now we do it to ourselves. It is a matter of how to stop doing these bad things to ourselves so we can progress to our very best".
The OP never said anything about bringing back Colonialism, just British rule. There's plenty of former colonies doing great including the USA and many South American and African Countries. The case for Jamaica may make sense since it is similar to Bermuda.
I could be wrong but if there is a large degree of corruption on the island, I'd imagine they could benefit from modern British "rule" because there would be more accountability.
