I was just reading about Chile and how the country has been continuing to improve as a place to visit and live in recent years. To those of you who have traveled or lived there, what are your feelings about the country? How would you describe the people, lifestyle, and scenery?
Very conservative people...but very friendly and nice.
Lots of kissing in the parks.
I went there with the potential interest of living there a long time. I lasted about 10 days in Santiago...felt a bit bored by the people and city....the locals told me to go to Brazil if I wanted to enjoy life. So I did, and had a great time
Santiago and Chile is a bit like going to Albuquerque and New Mexico. You get there, and the people seem a bit more provincial than you imagined...and you realize how isolated you are from things. Yet the name and such attracted you nontheless, for better or worse.
I lived in Chile for over a year. Everyone was pretty laid back and easy to get along with. I lived in a fishing village, where they spoke a language that even people in Santiago couldn't understand, so that was a little bit frustrating. I certainly had absolutely no experiences that would lead me to advise anyone not to go there. But don't expect the coast or the beaches to be warm, its frigid. Residency is easy, you get stamped in for 6 months and all you need to do is take the bus to Mendoza twice a year and re-enter. Finding housing can be very difficult, since the economy is improving, there is heavy demand from upwardly mobile people, who quickly fill housing vacancies.
I studied abroad in Chile. It's a great country and very beautiful, but I think it lacks excitement. The people are very nice, but as someone mentioned earlier, fairly conservative and can be boring. I feel as if Chile is a very socially liberal country (I could be very wrong on that), but fiscally it is very conservative. I think it's a great place to visit and to live.
I spent most of my time in Santiago wonderful city. Best way to describe it is like a San Diego that is much much larger, much more dense, and much more urban, but it kind had a similar laid back vibe, Mediterranean weather (well much colder though) and architecture that for the most part is more modern.
Santiago had everything, great public transportation, architecture, culture, etc., but IMO it is just not a very exciting place. Very pleasant but nothing that will blow you away.
Never been..but I have heard from people who have traveled thruout SA that it is very advanced more so than Argentina. I like their accent..at least for the Chilean women it sounds very sexy

Unless things have changed a lot in 10 years...I didn't find Chile to be that advanced.
Buenos Aires certainly has a more cosmopolitan air. Santiago had more of a provincial feel.
When I think of 'advanced' I think of Japan with outdoor esclators everywhere, all kinds of public transportation options, and on and on. Clean air, etc.
It's a nice place, but 'very advanced' is a bit misleading.
From my South American travels, I found Chile to be the most expensive country I visited.
I never saw Santiago on my last trip, except for a bus transfer, and visited all the medium-sized cities to the south and the north, all the way up to Arica/Iqueque.
Big cities, in foreign countries, just don't cut it for me anymore! Off to the less visited cities I go! I loved Rancagua, just south of Santiago!
