Really depends where you are but Brazil in general is not cheap. In Rio, apartments overlooking the beach go for millions of dollars now, normal two bedrooms in good nieghborhoods not overlooking the beach are going for half a million. Renting is relatively expensive here too. A one bedroom in Copacabana neighborhood will set you back about 2,000 USD or so per month. At the low end. If you get out or Rio of course it gets cheaper but really depends where. Like the US prices change a lot by region. The northeast might have some cheaper towns still but it also has a lot of crooks who try to rip off foreigners. The south is a more developed region, has less people who will try to rip you off, and is really not that much more expensive than the northeast. Actually it is cheaper for some things because there is more of a middle class which means more economies of scale and has more efficient distribuition of goods. Of course the south gets cold in winter. But the novelty of seeing Brazilians playing in the snow can be fun.

Yes, Tiger Beer, but hers was a more positive comparison than yours, comparing the extroverts/generous/New World Americans and Brazilians to the rather introvert/stingy/Old World Europeans!
