Belize crime is the 5th highest in C.A. - adjacent to Guatemala which has the highest. You are safer on one of the islands than the mainland, if you don't have an expediter or tour manager.

Hamanasi is a dive resort in Hopkins Village about 50 km south of Belize City. The road trip is at best 3 hrs long. We used to fly to Dangriga and boat in from there.

You have Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Panama. 5th ranking is not so bad I wouldnt think.

You forgot Mexico to the north and Guatemala to the west. With their cartel's fighting among themselves, it's sure to spill over into Belize. During the 12 months preceding Guatemala alone had 95 deaths a week. That's 4940 killings!

Just got back from about 11 days in Belize. First time visit to Placencia, San Ignacio, Caye Caulker, Belize City.

Here's a link to my post on city-data in another similar thread: Any thoughts on Placencia, San Ignacio, Caye Caulker Belize?

Please don't build a Walmart in Belize... or a Home Depot. I would prefer the little man stay in business... Belize relies on it. It isn't the United States, however, Walmart has done enough damage to the US.

There are 3 Brodie's stores in Belize. 2 in Belize City, and 1 in Belmopan. Think non-supercenter Walmart.

There's also a pretty decent-sized Home Center across from Brodie's in Belize City (Buttonwood Bay) that looked a little like a Home Depot (although I didn't go inside). Brodie's is as nicer than Wal-Mart IMHO... it had good grocery side and housewares side. Prices compared to U.S. , most items cost more than in US. For Expats, I'd recommend getting most of your produce from local farmer's mkts.

When we left Belize, ketchup was $7 a bottle at Brodie's. Now that we are over in the BVI - that same ketchup is $4 bottle - about the same as in Miami.
