Centro Civico is a great and very central area to be. You have public transportation access to anywhere from there. It is very urban, doesn't lack anything. You also have the Passeio Publico which is a mini zoo. I used to walk through every morning to get to work, it was really nice and peaceful. Just as any other major city, there will be some homeless people sleeping in the parks/streets, cant avoid that. You wont go wrong living in this area. Good luck!
I have lived in Centro Civico for nearly two years now.
I don't live in Curitiba, but I live in nearby Paranaguá. It takes little over an hour to drive to Curitiba. Curitiba is definitely a lot quieter than Rio de Janeiro due to having fewer tourists. It's pretty hot most of the year, although it can get cold there occasionally. There was snow there last year. It's a lot safer than Rio too.
Recently, Curitiba has been in the news because one of the stadiums where the 2014 World Cup is being held is located there.
