Chile is a very very modern country. It has some colonial stuff but very little. I am also under the impression Venezuela does not either, but I could be wrong. Aside from that I think most, if not all, will have the architecture.

Don't all the countries in Central America have very little to no colonial buildings?

Generally, the cites of Latin America that suffered the worst earthquakes!

After a quake, desperate to provide housing, there's usually little time, or money, to try and reproduce the old. Get it up as quickly as possible! Ugly, unattractive, so what! People need a place to live! Banks and hotels are in a hurry to get back to business!

Why is Managua, Guatemala City so unattractive?

Costa Rica has very little in the way of colonial buildings. The one metro area, San Jose (Central Valley), is very sprawled out.

Twice! When you compare the cobble-stoned, colonial city of Antigua, 40+ miles way, with Guatemala City, you can see the contrast!

There's some colonial buildings in GC that have survived, like the Spring Hotel I've stayed in downtown, but walking around a good part of the city, they are far inbetween.

But many tourists crave the older restored colonial cities when they go to Latin America, like Cuenca, Ecuador. Myself, I appreciate the colonial flavor, but I also love modern architecture.

I spent some time in Huaraz, Peru 5 years ago. That entire city, aside from one small block, was leveled by an earthquake in 1970, so all the buildings in that city were built post-1970 and it shows! Colonial architecture lovers should stay clear of here and go furthur north to Cajamarca!

i love Antigua and Cuidad Vieja Guatemala. Antigua is actually older that Cuenca, when it comes to colonial architecture. Did you also go to Tikal, when you were in Guatemala?
