Belize is a member of the UN, it is recognized as a nation by the UN since 1981 by everyone other than Guatemala. It is part of the British Commonwealth of Nations. The basis for Guatemala's claim to Belize comes from Clause VII of the Anglo-Guatemalan Treaty of 1859. Allegedly, British were to build a road between Belize City and Guatemala, and the road wasn't built. Since Belize didn't sign the treaty, the claim is that Belize is not bound by the treaty.

I don't think Guatemala would be able to take Belize.

That's absurd. How could Belize have signed it if Belize dident even exist at the time?

Besides, the British signed the treaty and as Commonwealth Realm nation of Belize is the successor state to the British colony of British Honduras/Belize then the treaty is in effect ....

Okay, Belize didn't sign it. Britain didn't sign it either, as far as I know.

Ah ha now it makes sense to me. I had previously thought the Guatemalans were just doing the ol arrogant approach the Spanish use with Gibraltar and Argentina with the Falklands.

I spent 3 months watching the border with Guat (mostly from the Belize side but not always) in '99 and also '06. It's the headquarters of the Jungle Training section of the SAS so I don't doubt it's being watched at this very moment.

It's very pretty around San Ignacio and down towards the border.
