Comparing Haiti to Jamaica is like comparing an extremely poor Massachusetts to a slightly average Rhode Island(Sorry only Americans from NE might get this). Haiti has 9 million+ people. Jamaica has an estimated 2,889,187. I guess as far as a destination goes Jamaica is on my list while a majority of Haiti is not but if JA had one huge slum like PAP(Metro POP. 2,470,762) as its capital then it would be a shoddy place(Haiti is for poor and some middle class Haitians). I look at it this way; my Jamaican friends and their relatives love to go to the Resorts in JA. My Haitian family members from Canada, USA, and DR had a funeral to go to last month and upon leaving Haiti concluded that they will not be going back (Me and my cousins who are all foreign born plan on going though). My uncle has tons of real estate and a new hotel/condo area that he is building in Mirebalais but they (my relatives) say the abject poverty in the nation is too unbearable to have a good time. JA isn't that poor or at least you can avoid it. In Haiti it smacks you in the face once you get to the airport. I do love both nations though! Slaves from the island of Jamaica played a HUGE role in the Haitian revoloution! Haiti though has potential, if the leaders can figure out how to administer the country.

That being said....when travelers talk about visiting the two countries....Jamaica seems to disappoint, and Haiti seems to surprise (in a good way). Maybe it's anticipation, and not meeting the expectation.

But, what do you think about these two countries and perceptions, etc.?
The problem is setting yourself up for expectations and that sets up people for disappointment. Don't travel somewhere expecting something. Travel with an open mind and ready to learn and take it for what it is. You can't imagine or expect something you have never been to or seen before. Be open minded.

I have been to both Jamaica and Haiti and they are both beautiful places and have rich histories and unique diversities and cultures to them.

I have traveled to Haiti on Google Earth. My perception is that it's a disaster in every imaginable way, environmentally, politically...
