I would like to know if anyone has had experience living in Honduras, and if so what a young American white male should expect/not expect in regard to salary, working/living conditions, lifestyle, and safety.

I encountered a job opportunity as an EFL teacher in a small school for K-6th grade in Florida, Copan. It is a small town near Parque Nacional Cerro Azul, about two hours by car from San Pedro Sula. I speak Spanish proficiently, so a language barrier would not be difficult, of course unless there is an indigenous language. The position would pay 5,000 lempiras a month, and housing would be arranged by the principal of the school.

From your experiences, how much money is needed to live comfortably in Honduras, which includes rent, food for a week, some traveling, and economical usages of utilities? Was safety ever a problem in urban/rural areas, specifically are fast crimes like muggings or home burglaries prevalent? According to my research, armed robberies against tourists is high. In addition, are foreigners who try to blend in (not tourists, but foreigners working in Honduras) routinely taken advantage of in money/services? (this question stems from my experiences in Peru/Costa Rica). I appreciate your input, thanks.

I have never lived in Honduras, but have been there many times. Cost of living would depend on ther size of the city, like here, the cities costing more. But the cost in any non tourist area will be low. San Pedro Sula is a large working town and in my opinion is dangerous. When there, use common sense, and don't be out alone at night. I am not famillar with Florida, Copan. I can tell you the Honduran people are nice, but you will be deemed rich whether you are or not and will pay more for somethings because of it. If you are white, you will not be able to blend in.

I am not discouraging you to go though. The country is very poor, but beautiful. I enjoyed my many visits there. I think if you are working with a school, you will find some loving Hondurans that will help you along the way.
