I think mostly because, in the aftermath of the US-sponsored civil war, the nation was plunged into chaos, with very high crime rates, that made it a rather undesirable country to live in. It took quite a while for El Salvador to get back on its feet.

I found that when there was civil wars going on in ex-Yugoslavia, a lot of emigres from those countries were also somewhat apologetic when they admitted that they came from there. The same with people from Iran, who sometimes call themselves Persians to avoid association with the regime.

Why, in alphabetical lists of countries, does El Salvador start with an E, but The Gambia doesn't start with a T?

My best friend is from El Salvador and he pretty much said what jtur88 stated. We jokingly said that when his father's family and his (many) relatives' families left El Salvador they put a dent in the country's population.
