Noted author, Jared Diamond's book "Collapse: How societies choose to fail or survive" devotes a chapter about why Haiti is so different from its neighbor, the Dominican Republic.

1. Haiti lies on the wrong side of the mountain range, to get needed rainfall which instead all falls on the Domin Repub.

2. Haiti has chosen to depend on firewood for its energy needs, and has totally cut down its forests. Aerial photographs reveal a sharp contrast looking at both sides of the border. The Domin Repub by contrast, for a long time has wisely invested in other sources of energy. It has preserved its forests in a national park.

3. Haiti's government and economic/ agricultural development model, was always less efficient than the Domin Repub.

You could write many books why. Add in an incompatible language with just about anywhere else as good French skills are rare outside the well educated , a lack of free and compulsory education, and poor location in general as almost every country located mainly between the tropics is at an economic disadvantage.

1. There is good reason why the English left 200 years ago.
2. Worst located piece of dirt in the world, hurricanes, earthquakes, deathly humid.
3. The only country in the new world that overthrowed it's on Gov, who happened to be doing a good job of things ( Puritans ).
4. Haitians are direct descendants of the worst slaves imported from Africa; small, uneducated, apathetic.
5. Most corrupt Gov outside Brazil.
6. _______ fill in blanks

No country in the western hemisphere should be so poor. Notelo84 your comment reeks of ignorance. Jackals from France and other countries including the U.S.A. have sucked the resources from Haiti and the Haitian people have been paying ever since. Why is that hard to comprehend?

And have supported the most oppressive leaders in Haitian history, through all means possible. I mean Aristide was not a great president, but he was not as bad as the others and he was removed twice from the Presidency.

http://www.france24.com/en/20130510-...ry-reparations

Quick excerpt:

After winning its independence from France, Haiti was forced to pay-off the French government 90 million gold francs to compensate European slave-owners for their financial losses and in exchange for recognition of Haiti's autonomy.

“Haiti was the victim of a double crime. First the crime of slavery, and then this ‘ransom’ for its independence,” Tin said, adding that the reimbursement, which continued until 1946, was equivalent to $90 billion. Other sources have estimated the payment at $21 billion.

Then France should return the money.
