Has anyone been there? It's soooo cheap to fly there from YYZ it doesn't make sense to me.

I read awhile ago that it is kind of sketchy in the towns (Puerto España?) but I'm not sure that is well founded. What do you think? Looks great for beaches and fishing.

I have always been curious about Trinidad. Trinidadians I have met are usually freindly, Trini food is great and i'm sure they have nice beaches there too. I wonder what the cost of staying there would be compared to other Islands.

It's not a favorite among travelers. It's known to have a horrible tourist industry. Getting a hotel during the carnival season is hell. Crime is a growing concern for tourists as there has been reports of robberies and in rare cases murder of tourists.

other than that, it's a beautiful island with an interesting culture. The women are beautiful as well.

I live in Trinidad.
Trinidad is good for food, eco-tourism, hiking, interesting cultural mix
Tobago is laid back with beaches, hiking (more typical Southern Caribbean)

Flights would be comparatively cheap as tourism is not the main income earner. So tourist infrastructure is not nearly as good as some of our neighbours.
Crime tends to not be random and is limited to mainly gangs in the slummy areas of Port of Spain (Trinidad lies on the transhipment route for cocaine heading to North America). Once you know wher to avoid and exercise the same level of caution that you would in any unfamiliar place you should be fine.

Trinidad & Tobago is an awesome place, definitely worth visiting. Just to echo others in this thread, the nation has rich culture, great food, beautiful interior etc. Trinidad definitely does have a different feel than most islands since natural gas and oil tend are the greatest sources of income. It's not very touristy overall, which perhaps allows for a more authentic experience. Tobago provides a more touristy feel and the nicest beaches.

Regarding Carnival in Trinidad, so many people come that hotels do tend to fill up, but there are other options for lodging. There is plenty information online if you are interested in taking part in the festivities. And of course, like any other place, crime exists. Be smart, and you should be fine.

Personally, I tell people that it's great to first experience T&T with someone from there who can really show you around if possible. But don't let that deter you from going. If you do visit, enjoy!
