So, basically around 80% African, as the information posted stated 17-18% European ancestry. This states a slightly smaller percentage.
Well--in the article, I saw/read this:
Exactly How "Black" Are Black Americans?
* According to Ancestry.com, the average African American is 65 percent sub-Saharan African, 29 percent European and 2 percent Native American.
*According to 23andme.com, the average African American is 75 percent sub-Saharan African, 22 percent European and only 0.6 percent Native American.
* According to Family Tree DNA.com, the average African American is 72.95 percent sub-Saharan African, 22.83 percent European and 1.7 percent Native American.
* According to National Geographic's Genographic Project, the average African American is 80 percent sub-Saharan African, 19 percent European and 1 percent Native American.
* According to AfricanDNA, in which I am a partner with Family Tree DNA, the average African American is 79 percent sub-Saharan African, 19 percent European and 2 percent Native American.

Those various different companies have various databases of populations. Also considering the amount of self pro-claimed "African Americans" and the amount of "testees" with those companies (African American lineage) the "average" African American autosmal analysis will vary from company to company.
It is pretty safe to say, the average African American has "degrees" of admixtures. There are no rules, African Americans did not pop off an assembly line in Milwaukee. The European ancestry in African Americans will also vary by local in the US, say for example, Louisiana vs. New York or Virginia.
Just to add, most if not the predominate population of African Americans still look identifiable of West African ancestry, even if they have a degree of European ancestry. Certainly, you have outliers Mulatto types like the Mario Van Peeble, Jada Pinketts and Vanessa Williams however, these people come from ancestry with very recent European and mixed race ancestors. When people look at them, even though they are primarily of African ancestry, because of the way they look, one would associate them with mixed ancestry.
These men from Ghana, look like the majority of African American men.
The same with these women from Ghana. Many Black women carry these phenotype.
Here is a African American family, who probably has some degree of European admixture. No one could really tell the difference if they were recently from Africa or not.
You're kidding right?? The women look a lot a like but not the men.
Yes, your average African-American IS a "mulatto". If there was a "white people" tribe, and it used standards similar to what local Native tribes around here use for membership and benefits, most Afro-Americans would qualify.
What's wrong with black people just being considered black? I don't know why black people love to say they're mixed. I'm black, and damned proud of it.

But what's wrong with knowing your lineage and being proud of it as well?
Many Caucasians say they're Irish, Italian, etc. They don't just say, "I'm Caucasian".

So how does knowing what ethnicity some ancestor from 6 generations ago enhance my life in any way? Does that put more money in my pocket?
