I'd like to buy some land in cuba, grow some tropical fruits that we can't grow in the US, and build a space port.

And buy some prime beach front property.

on the cheap of course!

The United States already has numerous tropical places: Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

A better analogy would be "Can the US invade and annex the Baja California peninsula to protect the thousands of Americans who live there?".

LOL

Don't post this in the Miami forum. I don't think most Miamiams think it is a good idea. Most Floridians want the opposite, let The Castros take over Miami.

Please don't. Everyone in Cuba qualifies for welfare and it would be a very expensive process to make them all US nationals.

The territories are very expensive to maintain and we sure don't need another one.

I'm not quite sure, though, why we still embargo Cuba when we have relations with every other communist or oppressive country in the world,.

Are you insane? That is a horrible analogy. Invade a peninsula with millions of Mexicans, most of whom are happy living there, to protect a few 1000 gringos who chose to live there because they like Mexico?

What do they need protection from?

First, Russia has not annexed Crimea yet
Secondly, I believe that while of course the OP is daydreaming about the US annexing Cuba, he has a point : Washington should make moves so as to confer full statehood to Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana islands, US Samoa, US Virgin islands, and Guam. Those associated states half cooked statuses are not good for anyone and confusing in my book. Either you are in or you are out.
