Statistics in Cuba are misleading, to say the least. All Health statistics are "cooked" by the MINSAP (Health Department) following "orientations" of the Council of State....
Plus, lots of population are in the fringe of society and they don't exist.
For example, "illegals" (inhabitants from the east that move to Havana) are as illegal as a mexican illegal in the US, they don't have identity card, no food rationing card, etc.
People did look healthy and fit 15 years ago, even during the "Special Period" (when the USSR pulled out in 1992) but now the influence of the "empire" is very strong, there's more money, etc...so there's more JUNK FOOD, and Cuban staples are not healthy....so now you see a lot of obese people.
As to Health Coverage, a pretty complex issue that could take many pages, but Health Coverage beyond certain limit is not free, since you are forced to obtain drugs, gifts to doctors, etc, etc.
The answer is easy.
Doctors earn 30 € a month.....of course, Doctors are human beings and eat...so Doctor's cars (they are allowed to have cars) are packed with chickens, hams, croquetas and cakes. As Doctors have cars, they work as "botero" or occasional taxi drivers.
Now, a large proportion of Cuban doctors are in Venezuela, and the ones working as doctors in Cuba are practising doctors from South America, Cubans are afraid of those doctors and they are called "head shrinkers".
But of course, Cuban Health Care is not comparable to American Health Care, unless you have access to certain hospitals allocated (not in a blatant manner) to High Ranking officials, camajanes, etc,...sometimes they let a "palestino" be treated when some foreign official is around.
Haha the average Cuban looks 1000x better than the average American and they can afford universal healthcare because the citizens don't spend half their lives eating themselves into an early grave.
Life expectancy is mostly determined by diet, not medicine. As long as you can provide basic medicine and the diet is good, then life expectancy is going to be reasonable high.
Cuba is not the only poor country with a life expectancy similar to America. Albania, Domanican Republic and Domanica are poor but has similar life expectancy to the US. Jordan has a life expectancy of 80, which is similar to European countries.

Read this testimonial Sean Penns of the world and tell me if you still think Cuba is paradise:
"This is very good news that makes me tremendously happy. ... With my first paycheck I'm going to buy a toy for my youngest grandson, who's 3," said Soraida Pina, a 62-year-old nurse. "This will open new doors for me."
Her salary was double and she is happy because now she can afford a freaking toy.
US citizens CAN travel to Cuba, by air IF they first go to either Canada, or Mexico, and fly to Cuba from there. Neither Canada nor Mexico care about Americans who travel to Cuba. Upon arrival in Cuba, US passports are NOT stamped, they have a paper visa inserted, which is removed when you leave Cuba. US dollars are converted to Cuban "tourist script " that is spendable anywhere in the country.
Canadians travel to Cuba a lot. We also trade with them, a lot. Canada sells machinery, raw materials, and appliances and lumber to Cuba. They sell us sugar, rum, cigars, and rice.
Cuban adult students come to study at Canadian Universities, and Cuban Doctors come to Canada, to improve their medical knowledge, and expertise.
Yeah, i have plenty of American friends who visited Cuba through Mexico. Not that difficult, honestly.
It is super common, I know 4 people who have gone to Cuba via Mexico.
