Most of them (Europeans, Japanese) came to work in agriculture first but having them and their descents helped the industrialization of Sao Paulo because large industry and services need large offer of workers and with some qualification.

So millions of them moved from farms to work in cities in urban occupations. Is really difficult find a paulistano (people from capital city) that don’t have part of family or whole family from some small city of deep parts of Sao Paulo State descent of agriculture workers immigrants.

Most people from Rio de Janeiro have their families born in the city already many generations probably from colonial epoch being them white or black or brown.

The most important event what possibility the industrialization of Sao Paulo State was the big amount of money that coffee producers (barões do café) made early last century. Sao Paulo was the biggest coffee exporter in whole world between 1880 and 1940 and the farms owners reinvested all the money in others business specially industry.

When northwest for example had their rich epoch with sugar or Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro with gold they were colony so Portugal transfer the money to Europe, and not reinvested there and how workers were slaves they didn’t get part of that money, wasn't created a internal market.

Sorry for the bad English but I hope you understand me.
