1. Dominicans that can overcome some of the bigger problems with life.
2. And doing it with a smile on their face.
3. While singing songs of joy and misery over their life on a gua gua to the "Capital"
4.All the while knowing they will put some kind of food on the table that night.
5.And enjoying the little that they have at that moment and being thankful for it.

Hard to understand for the typical North American.

5 things I like in no particular order,

1) The people can be very nice and friendly. Dominicans are naturally very sociable and outgoing.
2) The beaches
3) The exchange rate
4) For a small country it packs a lot of natural beauty. There are a lot of breathtaking places if your willing to get out of the all inclusive resort.
5) The weather

5 things I don't like in no particular order,

1) A lot of natives see $$ when they see a foreigner (yup even if you have Dominican heritage). After a while you start to feel like a lot of people aren't genuine and just want something out of you.
2) DR isn't exactly a cultural powerhouse. Some of the more interesting more unique aspects of Dominican culture have been historically repressed or put in the background.
3) Rampant corruption
4) The food is mediocre, I mean it's okay but if you stay more than a week or two you'll get tired of it.
5) The big class discrepancies. Not much of a middle class.

.

Care to expand on that?

The beautiful women. On par with the Puerto Ricans for the most beautiful women in the world.

Other than that, I can't say, because I've never been to the D.R.

How would you define Dominican culture?

I generally think of merengue and baseball, and not much else.
