Seriously?

A TV show is your parameter of "reality"?

That's quite a foolish retort considering you have never actually seen the program. I suppose you think "Cosmos" poses a distorted view of reality because it is on television as well.

It's amazing what passes for education in some of these countries...

I thought Canadians were less sensationalist. Looks like even Canada can't escape ignorance even with its PISA results, education obviously doesn't always equal rationality. Brazil's danger isn't overhyped nor do the dangers render it a no-go zone.

I went to Fortaleza quite a long time ago now in 2002 but I had a great time. I had a friend show me around and we went to several beaches and enjoyed the food and nightlife. People there were very nice and friendly. I didn't really feel unsafe at all just need to keep your wits about you. That whole Northeast Brazil region is a hidden gem if you like beautiful beaches and it's not to be missed!

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. You haven't made it to 2020 yet.

(Not that I'm wishing anything bad upon you, of course.)

I'm glad that you weren't among the victims in these recent headlines:

Mass shooting at packed Brazilian (Fortaleza) nightclub leaves 18 people dead and 12 injured - most of them young women

I didn't see much of Fortaleza, the bus drivers were on strike when I was there, so I just stayed overnight and went on. There was no internet then, so nobody knew there was a high murder rate. They could sleep peacefully in their beds without worrying about being murdered in their sleep.l It wouldn't have bothered me anyway, earlier that year I was in San Pedro Sulla and Medellin.
