This whole story is about four young Americans behaving badly, getting trashed and damaging someone else's property. They were asked, robustly, to pay for the damage which they did. That might not be the way things are done in the USA or in Western Europe but, apparently, it is the Brazilian way .... and they were in Brazil.
Clearly Lochte is short of a brain cell or two because, at that point, he should have kept his mouth shut and put the incident down to experience. Nobody needed to know; it was done and paid for. So quite why he came up with a largely fictitious story and which was then fed to the media is a mystery and especially when, in so many places, there is now CCTV to give a true picture of what happens.
He has embarrassed himself, he has embarrassed and inconvenienced his friends, he has embarrassed the US swimming federation, he has embarrassed the US Olympic Committee and he has embarrassed the USA. And none of that was necessary.
The one certainty coming out of this whole sorry affair is that Lochte is a moron.
Why did he do it? Well, it's obvious he just wanted his little 15 min of fame with that stupid billy bush who interviewed him. He wants to be a celebrity above and beyond just being an athlete. But the problem with him us that, aside from being a great swimmer, he has no other talent.
