If Venezuelan women were wearing hijabs and nikabs there would be an outcry of sympathy and support from western countries. We would be letting them in by the tens of thousands. We barely hear about this **** on the news here. Latin Americans are hated here in North America. Now Colombia has to deal with this all on their own.
If Venezuelans wore hijabs and nikabs, the reaction wouldn't be any different. There is a refugee fatigue throughout all western countries.
It has nothing to do with a 'hated of Latin Americans'. It's just western country fatigue. But, you have to imagine that many American cities already have large Latino populations.
My personal feeling is that it should be mutual. If Los Angeles can be 60% Mexican, why not have Mexico City be 60% American? It can't just be 'one-way' all the time...everyone gets to become American, but damn near impossible to get rights to emigrate to Mexico.
That is probably another reason that all the refugees want to go to North America as well..they can become citizens. Whereas if they wanted to emigrate to say Mexico, we just never hear of it. There is some blockage in the brain, that people suffering from a crisis in Venezuela wouldn't even consider a Mexican response, but wait for an American response..and if the U.S. doesn't respond favorably with 'let them in now', we assume Americans have hatred against them. But a place like Mexico, no one cares one way or another if they have no response or reaction.
Venezuela will continue in a downward spiral for possibly decades due to the blunders of the last 15 years under Chávez / Maduro / PSUV. There has been a brain drain of the well-educated from Venezuela that will end up sinking the economy deeper into collapse. Any country in Latin America that takes in immigrants from Venezuela that bring along good education & skills will likely benefit in the long run. Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil or Mexico with an oil production industry would be foolish not to welcome Venezuelan oil workers wanting to flee the chaos at PDVSA.
Antonio, good post on the graphic of where VZ ppl are going or have already migrated to. As some others have said, because it's a continuing hum. crisis these numbers will increase unfortunately.
I think the reason why you have a lot more sympathy towards Syrians is because the Western nations had a HUGE role in their civil war. I know the US always had an impact on Latin America for our interests, but I don't know how much of what happened with Venezuela under Chavez and Maduro was our fault.

According to this video there are over 100,000 Venezuelans in Peru. If that were the case this would be higher than even Spain's. Then again countries like Spain and Colombia could have even more because of undocumented immigrants.
I was actually considering visiting Venezuela until they recently had some sort of diplomatic fall out with Canada. Their only friends left are Nicaragua and Bolivia. Even Cuba seems to be distancing themselves from Madurro.
What exactly was the fall out about?
