I think there's interest not obsession in Cuba. If it was obsession you would have reports or stories of people renouncing their American citizenship just so they can live/visit Cuba. IMHO that's not happening. I also think the interest in Cuba across several generations and age groups in the US.

Here are my interests of wanting to visit Cuba: cigars, culture (visual arts, music, festivals, carnivals, food, etc.), their interests in cars from the 50's (more so than here in the US), weather, beaches, etc.

I don't think I have an obsession with the island based on my interests especially none of what I listed is political in nature.

I haven't noticed any obsession towards Cuba. Maybe Cuban-Americans, but other that those no one really gives 2 jacks about Cuba.

Initially Castro wanted a good relationship with the USA. He traveled to Washington DC hoping for a meeting with President Eisenhower. It has been said that Eisenhower didn't trust him because of his choice of wearing military garb. This doesn't make perfect sense to me but that is the story.

Rather than meeting with our neighbor, Eisenhower snubbed him and played golf instead. Castro reciprocated by nationalizing USA assets in Cuba which were pretty substantial. Both leaders earned an F- for their respective efforts at diplomacy.

Castro went on to embrace the USSR which was only too happy to adorn Cuba with nuclear missiles that could have maimed the southern states. Then we had The Bay of Pigs fiasco in April, 1961. The Cuban Missile Crisis in October, 1962. Followed by multiple failed attempts at assassinating Castro.

Nationalizing our oil assets and gambling houses pretty well assured rotten international relations. As a result, the people of Cuba have paid a horrible price for six decades. I tend to doubt that Trump will actively seek to open up relations with Cuba. For one thing, Cuba is, in many ways, a competitor with Florida.

Another prime example of the failures of socialism. Yet our campus millennials are largely thrilled with trying a doomed system once again.

You've definitely proven my point, as well as showcased the level (or lack thereof) of your maturity as well. Well done!

Oh, BTW, if you even read history, the Platt Amendment pretty much gave the US carte blanche to intervene in Cuban affairs as they see fit. Fair to say, the Cubans were not very happy with that.

Taking over a territory or country has a lot of troubles and difficulties that come with it. The Russians are having a lot of problems with their aggressive moves in the Ukraine, both internationally and domestically over it. So just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Not really. Not sure what is bitter about it or even political. I love traveling. And would be open to traveling anywhere. But I do have a priority list, considering travel is costly in both time and money.

And I've met several people that have said something on the line of: "I want or I have traveled to Cuba before white people/Americans ruin it."

I don't really care for that attitude. It is smug.

Cuba still holds tthat romantic notion in some people's minds, due to the fact that it's been pretty isolated for so long. In many ways, these people are all too happy at keeping Cuba underdeveloped as they view it as a glorified museum.
