Before I visited Colombia, I heard horror stories in the past from people hailing cabs back in the day and getting kidnapped, robbed, and stripped down to their clothes naked. So I was told before I went to Colombia to use Uber, which is safe because obviously the identity of the driver and passenger are both verified. Obviously taxis opposed Uber, but if the claims of the kidnapping is true it means ridesharing helped increase safety around the world and this is pretty important for South America. (No offense if those horror stories are inaccurate, i was repeating what a man who has lived in Colombia told me).
