That is just scary.

I was there a few years ago, but only for around a week.
I heard a lot of scary stuff before I left warning not to go here or there... but when I was there I did not really feel that unsafe.

Mind you it was a pretty sheltered trip.

We got pick up at the Air Port by a family friend and my Aunt at the Airport and went directly to my god mother's house. Then from there we checked in to the Marriot ( there were armed guards with machine guns lol... that was a bit scary ).

But we ventured around a bit on our own without issue in Port of Spain.

We were walking around the main park area and went to the zoo.

But everything else we either went with family or had a private driver that was a family friend.

My Aunt and Uncle gave us hell for taking a Maxi Taxi to the Mall on our own. We took a taxi back which was an interesting experience.

I think because we were going stuff like that people assumed we were from there until we spoke.

I did not stay at the Hilton only because I was reading the reviewed and the hotel is wonderful but the advice people not to even leave the hotel by foot at the surround area has crime issues.

There is a street called Charlotte street we were warned not to go too, but by dad went with my aunt and no issue. My aunt goes there all the time and said you just need to be careful.

It is really hard to know what to expect.

When we went to the south to the pitch lake, temple by the sea and stop in San Fernando to visit some family that live part of the year there and part of the year in the USA. We did not have any issues.

Tobago is amazing. I have rarely heard any issues about Tobago. I was looking a homes for sale there and wow. Nice homes, but there are lots of restrictions on buying. Night and Day from Trinidad.

I was there for the summer numerous times as a kid and never encountered anything out of the normal.

It is hard to say.

I have family there with dual citizenship to either Canada, the USA or England.
I know they have businesses there, but they had businesses and nice homes overseas so no clue why they stay.

My Aunty might be going back. I wonder if she will really want to stay. Her family is from the south but I am sure they live in gated communities now as they are all professionals.

I would not want to be watching my back every minute to ensure I was not being followed home.

I have had cousins say there have been followed home from events or parties but nothing ended up happening.

I know I have been told by various relatives people don't go out at night at much and have private parties or they go the casino which has high security.

I think it always depends on where you go and who you are with the country.

I would go to visit, but never want to live there.

My wife’s uncle got stabbed in his doubles restaurant. Her cousin got carjacked at gun point right outside of the cricket field named after him. Not sure if matters who you’re with.

Okay. That is really scary and sad.
I hear suck different views from people. I have co-workers who go every year and they seem unphased. Then I hear stories like what you mentioned. Unfortunate.

Yeah it’s hard to give a judgment call from 3k miles away. But her family are relatively wealthy land and business owners there.... Likely being such small community it makes them a target.

You have not been told off .... until you get told off by a Trini.

It will be fast .... melodic .... dramatic ....be full of word play and likely end with a hand waving in your face and some one kissing their teeth .

Oh yes I witnessed that at a carnival when a woman caught her husband with another one at a fete at the Hilton. Slashed tires and broken windows and then a total "buse" down in dramatic Trini style. Quite like a soap opera Trini style. He protested that he was just "dancing" but she claimed that the "wining" was too meaningful. You are a Trini so you get the picture.

Oh I know what you are saying.
I have Trini blow up radar.
I know how to tell when s@@@ is about to hit the fan.
There is a like a vibe meter.
There seems to be cues to pay attention too.
Also if people have been drinking things tend to get even more dramatic.
You serious need to de-escalate before the explosion.

I have been coaching my non-Trini husband for years how to read this vibe especially when interacting with my family. Trini's are very friends and very nice.... but I am not kidding to anyone who does not know if you are rude to them or disrespect them you are going to be told off good and proper.
