Actually in the 80s there were some middle class people that left central America. If you were branded a Socialist or related to one, you better skip town or you would come up missing or have your genitals shoved in your mouth. The right wing death squads were no joke. The political climate of the 80s in some countries was of pure terror. That is why we are so ****ed up now.

It's a whole range. Some are poor. Some are uneducated. Others are middle class and educated. I would say a lot have through a high school education and are not especially poor in Mexico. But although not being poor in Mexico, the U.S. still offers much better wages and it's easy to cross the border by land.

There are a lot of people from other countries - including Colombia - who fly here on a tourist visa and stay illegally, for exactly the same reasons: earning the dollar in better wages than what you can get back home, so it's not fair to imply that it's mostly "poor, uneducated people from Mexico."

In fact, most of the people I work with are legal immigrants who have come here for the same reason - to earn dollars.

FYI, I spent most of my life living around or with immigrants from Mexico. Most of my friends were basically "middle class" in Mexico.

The 80s was a LONG LONG TIME ago lol !
I grew up with lots of people that let Centre American and South America around in the 80s for those reason.
I knew this guy with the last name Castro who's family had to leave for that reason even though that were not actually related to Fidel Castro.

I also dated someone who's family came from Central America around that time for similar reasons.

I think that might be a significant difference between people that immigrated from the Caribbean in the 70/80s vs people that immigrated from Central or South America.

My family left because we better opportunities for career advancement, more things to do and better shopping malls in my mom's case. There was no war. It was mostly about getting more money to buy nicer and more things. You had to walk in to Canada with your own money if you were coming from the Caribbean or if you were actually really poor you came buy being sponsored to be a nanny or something like that.

Totally different situation.

Come to think of it ... that explains a lot.

Almost all the kids I new from Centre and South America growing up were a bit more gloomy.
Like for example they guy I dated. I did not realize he was working so much while in school to actually help his parents pay bills. I was only working so much so I could buy Chanel lip gloss, nail polish and buy more fun stuff ( wow I miss being a teenager ).

Also a knew a bunch of guys from El Salvador and this girl which were buy no means related or really new each other. All so depressing. I have no idea what happened to the girl ( I get back to you I need to look her up on facebook). The other 2 guys both became very politically active in their teens and later in life. One actually ran some outreach centre for Latin American immigrants in Toronto, but went back to El Salvador a while ago. The other one ended up being a social worker that works with being with hard core mental health issues. Both cute ... but way too intense for my temperament.

Forget it I looked that girl up and no where to be found. She was so depressed all the time. She looked like she had a cloud of doom over her head all the time.

There was such a huge social gap. Being from Trinidad we live and breath the concept of life is a party. So our lives basically centered around the idea of having parties for any and everything.... vs most of these specific people that just seem somber by comparison. Interesting....

No, with all due respect UL, according to past posts a) she is a man and b) he will bash everywhere from Europe in general, to Africa, America, Austria, his own country of Columbia, and Germany as well.

Stay tuned, maybe more countries to follow.

Concerning the question by the OP...the volatility has been building over the years and is currently a brouhaha due to the handling of separating children from their parents and of course the high global profile of President Trump. That said, apparently it (the brouhaha) has worked its magic and it is reported that Trump will no longer separate children from their parents.

Personally, I feel it's not over yet and more concessions will be made...until there will be nothing more to do except to hand the key over to anyone and everyone who manages to reach the shores of America, however they reach them, by land, or by sea they will continue to embark on the journey...legally or otherwise.

They are pushing forward against all odds and at least trying to achieve something better in life.

Was America not founded on people with this type of mentality?
Yes America was founded...in 1776 and as one would imagine a great deal has changed since that time.

If America had a proper vetting process in place, such as your country, Canada, we would only be considering those with skills we needed and money to support themselves when they arrive.

I don't really know what Canada was founded on, perhaps you could enlighten me/us?

War on Drugs as it exists outside USA boundaries also needs to cease.
Free trade is what got us in this mess in the first place. Free trade is how the wealthy assure that they keep getting wealthier, with the freedom to exploit resources and labor in countries that don't have the economic base to compete with the big global cartels.

Here is the irony in life in a nut shell.

Those who have more complain those who have less have less because they are not driven.

When people have less try to get more they are scolded for breaking rules and laws created in most cases by those who have more to protect their interests and assests.

The truth is if you are starting with a huge huge disadvantage in order to move up you HAVE to bend or break the rules on some level because the rules are not favouring your success.

Those you bend rules to their advance or find ways to work around the rules to their favour are usually the ones they get to move forward.

Smart driven people try to find ways around the rules when it is there only way to succeed.

When I see someone who literally risks their lives to get somewhere because deep inside the they know they want a chance at something better..... I respect that!

From generation and generation of people that moved across land and sea seeking something better. The drive and dream of wanting something better is what keeps the world evolving. So at core I can't hold it against anymore who tries to push forward when the odds are against them. To all ignorant forgetful people across the Americas especially us who live in the most North 2 countries dont forget that many of our ancestors risk their lives trying to get here too and were also running here in desperation fleeing wars, persecution and starvation so who are we really to judge?

So not sure why anyone is buying in to anything less.

If there is a wall in front of you that seems like it is making your progress unlikely ... you need to find a way around it even if it means breaking the rules.

However, recently CNN international showed a documentary about the issue.

It was families mostly from Honduras, it narrated the story of a honduras woman who moved to the US illegally 10 years ago, this is a single young woman, well ten years later she has four kids, between the ages of 1 and 8. She is now risking deportation and her kids will stay in the US.

What are the contributions of this woman to the world? four kids? why would you move ilegally to a country do not learn the language, do not plan anything, just move and have four kids in ten years that you cannot support, and then worry you will be deported and your children taken away?

Am I the only person who gets angry at this kind of people?

Why would you go to another country that is not yours, enter illegally and then have four kids in less than a decade and then lend yourself to a documentary so that they can pity you.

I think its terrible that this is happening but sometimes it is hard to feel empathy.

What kind illegals go there? are they really that poor and uneducated?
Her children are citizens of the Untied States (born here)and there is some family or other person willing to care for them. She probably does speak english just not as well as her native language. She had to have some support because while the four kids could in theory get SSI she would have trouble cashing the check without a SSN and she might not count in the calculation for SSI.

Would have helped if American business interests and the American gov't hadn't worked with reactionaries in Honduras to help overthrow their democratically elected leader a couple of years ago....seeing as how most of the new immigrants being talked about in this particular case seem to be coming from that particular country...nothing happens in a vacuum...USA should not have to let everyone into the country...this fact cannot be denied...but there is also no need to overthrow a democratically elected leader just because he wanted to raise the second lowest minimum wage in the Western hemisphere (coincidentally, the democratically elected leader of the lowest minimum wage country in the Western hemisphere, Aristide of Haiti, was also overthrown when he tried to raise that minimum wage)
