You already know this, I'm just gonna say it for the benefit of others: Don't walk around with that kind of bag in south America. Thieves know what's fake and what's name-brand.

This trick also works for sneaking things in to concerts.... but that is a totally different thread.
You don't have to worry about that here in California!

Was once chased down Nossa Senora in Rio because I was wearing a new pair of trainers. They were slow and I easily got away. Kids were very much like the ones in the video.

I have been to Rio 6 times, staying in Leblon--arguably the most upscale and safest area of Zona Sul beach communities....I have never remotely felt concerned and have walked back at 1 or 2AM from Restaurant Row to my hotel (Promenade Palladium) in Leblon by myself....somehow, I do not think my 5'8", 165# presence scared away would be attackers....I have purposely not stayed in Copacabana for petty theft reasons and almost always take a taxi and back to and from Ipanema, Copacabana, and elsewhere...Leblon I feel safe, though I have heard petty theft is on the rise (especially mobile phones) in recent month. I am contemplating a trip at the end of August for fun and to get a break from the Miami summer.
