The concept of mixed race in the Caribbean is a joke.
There is no pure anything now.
Due to our history anyone who thinks they are "pure" anything is living in a bubble especially in Trinidad.
People are more likely to be sticking around with people in their own economic/ social class then to be worried about their skin colour.

I would say religion also plays a significant factor as well.
In Trinidad what matters most is income. Money gets your foot in the door.
Also if you have talent. If you don't come from much money, but are a good singer or have good connections to local artists that also helps. This is a carnival/ fete country and this is a huge part of the culture so if you don't have money just have Carnival/ fete connections because you 3rd cousin happens to be a huge local singer it helps get your in to the better social circles.

Mixed race identities make a lot of sense in a region where historically this has brought privileges. It is not a joke. Its a very serious matter. Up to 50-60 years ago being mixed allowed one access to jobs that being black didn't allow.

Race is a social construct, it is not biological so racial identities are whatever a given society says that they are.
