How is the drug trade effecting the Caribbean? PR, DR, in particular.

Pretty bad. Gov't officials and corporate tycoons corrupted. Increased crime as payment is often in guns and not just cash. An underground economy which has diverted young unskilled men as the alternatives in the legal economy aren't as remunerative.

Yes the Caribbean isnt this quiet place that it was 60 years ago. Even tiny places like Nevis and Tortola have been impacted by this.

Maybe as marijuana is legalized attention will move to that and the South Americans will have to find others to be part of their supply chain. Jamaica is now marketing to the lucrative marijuana trade in Canada and shipments have already been sent.

I heard an estimate that 30% of the cocaine that arrives in Puerto Rico via speedboat is consumed locally, and the rest moves it way on to the mainland. Drug smuggling, people smuggling (not as big now as it once was) and money laundering all go hand in hand on the Mona Passage; these guys are very diverse in their revenue sources. There are often Dominican middle men, but plenty of Puerto Ricans are involved as well.

The drug game is essentially a giant game of whack a mole--you stop it in one place and it heats up elsewhere. The Coast Guard has really tightened up enforcement around Puerto Rico, but plenty still comes in directly from Venezuela, or stops off in Haiti/the DR on its way to Puerto Rico. Once it´s on US soil on the island territory, hiding it in shipments or even in the regular old mail isn´t nearly as complicated as doing that from a foreign country.

The new frontier is the Pacific Coast of South America, and the vessel of choice is the narco-sub...they´re hard to detect when leaving from places like Nariño in Colombia and heading north to Central America or south to Ecuador. Once they clamp down on this route, another one will of course pop up. The demand is the real problem.
