Any tips or recommendations?

I'm going to be staying with a local so that will make things easier.

I'm interested in things that are off the beaten track or not obvious go-to places.

Thanks in advance.

Hi dude, I live here and I can give you some tips:

- Take care of your belongs when walking on the streets to avoid pick-pocketting;
- Try not to look like a tourist (I mean, that type of person who carries a professional Cannon on his neck)
- Avoid walking alone at night on sites inside this red polygon I drew on this map. It comprises historic center but there's high risk of getting robbed;

- As for me I always like to go to places where most of locals go on their time off. So I will start off on a typical saturday-like tour for a native

1. Go to Parque do Ibirapuera (sort of a Royal Botanic Gardens-like park, most relevant one here) for jogging or ciclying in the morning;
2. Meet local Japanese community at Liberdade and try their famous Pastel (and asian-like meal very popular);
3. Walk around Avenida Paulista and it's early 20th century mansions such as Casa das BullBoxer31 (it's free). Then, just across the street you have Japan House with interesting exhibition of plastic arts (also for free).
4. Have a little rest at Parque Trianon (just across from MASP, at same avenue)
5. Then take the subway or a bus to Beco do Batman, a tiny stretch of street with murals coloured on Graffiti art;
6. Weather allowing (because here we only enjoy 1,893 sunshine hours per year), go to Praça do Pôr-do-Sol (Sunset Square) and watch sun fading quietly in the distance (see pic below):
PS: Don't mind people smoking marijuana, they will be just relaxing like you

7. Go for a beer afterwards at Vila Madalena district and enjoy night scene

In addition to the excellent tips from Ricardo try:

-Italian food - SP has great Italian
-Go to a Churrascaria/Rodizio

-Consider a weekend trip by plane to Rio (only downtown airport) Make sure to get a window seat or drive to the coast/take a bus with your friend.
-Drink some draft beer outdoors
-Have some fresh fruit smoothies
-Go clubbing at least one night until daybreak (lots of bars open all night).

I am not from São Paulo city but what I know is that São Paulo has a nice variety of restaurants. If you are into Japanese food, thanks to the large Japanese community there, you'll have many options. The same goes if you are into Italian cuisine.
