Just two hours drive outside the Colombian capital of Bogota lies the Chingaza National Park at 12,000 feet above sea level. It is a "Paramo": an alpine tundra environment unique to South America with some really interesting flora. It is not the kind of landscape that comes to mind when people imagine Colombia. But it can easily be done in a day trip from Bogota and is well worth a visit.

This is my drone video of the place:

it's almost exclusive of Colombia. Other countries don't have such ecosystem except Ecuador. Ethiopia has something similar.

Looks interesting. Next time I´m in Bogota (some time within the next two years) I´ll see if I visit this place.

What types of animals live in that national park? I´m more interested in bird species, but any exotic four-legged species would make my visit worthwhile (if I see ut, lol).

Together with Chingaza you also have the twin national park of Sumapaz. Both just outside Bogota.

Between them they have about 300 species of birds, condors, bears, deers, foxes and mountain tapirs.

Venezuela also have some nice ones, in the highlands around Merida.

It's a magical place up there. I spent a couple of days at Iscayachi, a town of 1,000 up in the Bolivian altiplano at 3,500 meters.

I don't think there's anywhere in latin america that has the types of bears that we are accustomed to in northern america (black, brown).

Number 4 is the Andean Bear, number 5 is the black bear.

Our very own British loved Paddington bear is from the Andes
