What is, in your opinion the most scenic country in South America?

I'll go with southern Chile but the country as a whole runs the gamut from extreme desert to beautiful alpine forest. Argentina would be next. Peru around The Sacred Valley is gorgeous.

Scenic is an ambiguous word but I would say Bolivia for me. Love its outlandish landscapes and desolation.

Can't complain about Chile's Mediterranean region, and the south of the country is pretty spectacular. Argentina a distant second.

Colombia's mountains are the most beautiful I've seen in my life.

As I think you know, I´m from New Orleans originally, which is in fact mostly below sea level and certainly completely flat. First time we went there my wife kept asking where the mountains were, to which I had to tell her honestly, about 5 hours away if you´re driving 80 MPH on the interstate

So you can imagine the inverse effect, when some of my friends from New Orleans came here and we were on the bus between La Pintada and Medellín...they were simply blown away. That particular stretch of road is probably the most beautiful mountain landscape I´ve ever seen. It´s one of the few times that the road is actually in the clouds, you´re so high up. The little villages right on the side of the road are also like a whole other planet.

Indeed. If you like that stretch, take a drive from Mesopotamia to Sonsón when you get a chance. It's spectacular. Idyllic. I know that route because I have a distant relative in Mesopotamia; I went out to visit him and he took me on that drive. Just beautiful.

And I've seen a lot of mountains in my life (mostly U.S., having gone out backpacking/hiking/camping a lot since I was a kid.)

I've seen some great photos of the Argentine mountains as well (southern Andes), although I've never been there. I'd be curious to hear from anyone here who's backpacked/fished in those mountains.
