Hi! I’m looking for some suggestions in regards to visiting a city in the Caribbean for an extended weekend for two. I like wandering through cities and urban areas big or small that are lively and walkable and I’m quite interested in good seafood which I assume would be abundant. Beaches and hikes into greenery nearby are also a plus. I can rent a car, but prefer to minimize time spent driving so good mass transit / walkability would be great to have. I speak French moderately well and know some pretty basic Spanish.

You'll probably get more responses in the travel forum.

San Juan sounds like a good fit. El Yunque is nearby for hiking.

I second that...get a hotel en El Condado or Isla Verde, spend 2 days in Old San Juan, a day in El Yunque, and if there's still time rent a car and head to the west coast...San Germán, Rincón, Aguadilla, Isabela....and hit up the roast pork restaurants in Cayey either coming or going from San Juan. Safe travels...fyi you probably won't need to utter a word of Spanish in most places....even some Puerto Rican Americans travel there and only speak English.

I'd like to suggest Cartagena, one of the colonial gems in Latin America. It's beaches are not the best in the Caribbean though.

You can visit Santa Marta for that matter. Tayrona National Park.

Ok, I would like to suggest Santa Marta, Colombia because it meets your criteria for a nice city in the Caribbean. It is walkable in its historic centre with multiple choices for nightlife and entertainment. It has got nice beaches in world renowned Tayrona National Park and mountains nearby (highest mountain range within a few kilometres from sea: Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta).

You don't even need a car if you're staying within the city limits. Public transportation is easy to grab.
