About a year or so ago Hillary Clinton, speaking on behalf of Barack Obama, apologized to some Guatemalans for the US government using them in human test. Supposedly the victims didn’t know they were used as Guinea Pigs.

Did the US did a right thing by only asking for forgiveness?

Should the US do more to help the Guatemalans affected by this?

In a day and age (and country) where everything is solved with lots of money, I find the US government is trying to get out of its guiltiness by not paying at all. I could be wrong though.

Some links:

Quote:
The United States apologized Friday for a 1946-1948 research study in which people in Guatemala were intentionally infected with sexually transmitted diseases.

A statement by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius called the action "reprehensible."

"We deeply regret that it happened, and we apologize to all the individuals who were affected by such abhorrent research practices," the joint statement said. "The conduct exhibited during the study does not represent the values of the United States, or our commitment to human dignity and great respect for the people of Guatemala."

Quote:
U.S. government medical researchers intentionally infected hundreds of people in Guatemala, including institutionalized mental patients, with gonorrhea and syphilis without their knowledge or permission more than 60 years ago.

Many of those infected were encouraged to pass the infection onto others as part of the study.

About one third of those who were infected never got adequate treatment.

In 1999 Mr Clinton gave an apology to the same country for other atrocities the US was involved in.

Quote:
Mr Clinton made the apology in Guatemala City during his current four-nation visit to central America. It followed the publication last month of the findings of the independent Historical Clarification Commission which concluded that the US was responsible for most of the human rights abuses committed during the 36-year war in which 200,000 people died.

I wonder what else is the US government involved in. I know in Puerto Rico they tested some anti-contraceptive pills on some Puerto Rican women without telling them. What else was it involved?

A good number of people don't want to read of the damages we've done in Central America over the years, as it's too depressing. Like why we didn't allow Arbenz to rule Guatemala back in the 1950's, who merely wanted to raise taxes on the United Fruit Company. Labeled a communist, a more suitable leader was soon found.

There's a saying: We always pay for the sins of our Fathers.

Small wonder so many from that part of the world are seeking asylum today in the U.S. Payment for our sins!

Wow this is Disgusting. Honestly the US needs to get their act together and then they elect trump. I have a lot of time for the US, I believe in the principles and values it was founded on but the implementation has been abhorrent and now we have that buffoon in the White House. Not everything should be about the economy.

The apology was in 2010, not last year. Was the Guatemalan government unaware of the tests in the 1940s?

That would about the same time the CIA (a subsidiary of United Fruit) was assassinating reformist presidential candidates down there.

Yes, thank for the correction. I think the Guatemalan government knew it had the backing of the USA, otherwise it would had never done it unless they wanted a political suicide.

I also find it odd that the US government would apologize in words only at a time and country where most apologies are solved with money. Plus, why dismd the US government felt the need to apologize?
