We're going to be living in CR for 6 months beginning mid-November. I take several meds, a couple of which my insurance will not give me for more than 3 months at a time. When we were in Guatemala, we could buy "prescription" medications without a prescription.....even my pain meds (Norco). Does anyone know about Costa Rica? Laws, rules, actual practice regarding needing written prescriptions to buy Ambien, Norco, etc. Also, Guatemala did not have or sell Premarin. Anyone know about that in Costa Rica? THANKS for any information!

What meds are available in which country, over the counter or prescription only, is one of the best kept secrets on the planet.

I have never been able to find any kind of comprehensive guide for these questions. And I've been looking for years as we've lived overseas.

The only way I've found that's worked is to ask somebody there. Many places have expat website forums. I suggest that you google around for Costa Rican expat sites, hopefully you can find one, and post your question.

Even if your insurance will only pay for 3 months of meds in advance, if worse comes to worse you can buy the other 3 months and pay for it yourself.

Costa Rica is a small country. If you can't find what you need there, hop on a bus to David, Panama. One thing to remember about drugs in Latin America---their pharmacies are often not air-conditined and they may also have no refrigeration. Drugs can quickly lose their potency at warm temperatures, and if they have been stored in tropical heat for some time, they might not be effective. So choose a drugstore that is nice and cool inside.
